Smoke Alarm Tips to Keep Your Home Safe
Smoke spreads quickly when there is a fire and functional and properly used smoke alarms give you early warning to make a quick escape. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association to help keep your home safe:
Test your smoke alarms once a month and promptly replace dying batteries
Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home
It’s best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound
Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working
Stay updated with modern smoke alarms that are able to respond to a multitude of fire conditions while mitigating false alarms
Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling or high on a wall
Keep smoke alarms at least 10 feet from kitchen stoves to prevent false alarms
Special alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers are available for people with hearing loss
Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years of use
