Smoke Alarm Tips to Keep Your Home Safe

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips from your Househappy Concierge

Smoke spreads quickly when there is a fire and functional and properly used smoke alarms give you early warning to make a quick escape. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association to help keep your home safe:

  • Test your smoke alarms once a month and promptly replace dying batteries

  • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home

  • It’s best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound

  • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working

  • Stay updated with modern smoke alarms that are able to respond to a multitude of fire conditions while mitigating false alarms

  • Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling or high on a wall

  • Keep smoke alarms at least 10 feet from kitchen stoves to prevent false alarms

  • Special alarms with strobe lights and bed shakers are available for people with hearing loss

  • Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years of use
