Clean exterior windows and window screens
Wintry grime, spring rain, and pollen get caked onto your windows and become glaringly gross as the sun emerges for the summer. Windex will do the job on lightly soiled windows, but for dirtier windows, grab a sponge and a bucket of hot soapy water for the best results on exterior window cleaning.
Also, cleaning your windows won’t make a difference if you still have dirty window screens. Simply remove your screens and gently scrub them with hot soapy water. If your window screens don’t seem to be getting cleaned it may be time for complete screen replacement.
Caulk window seams
Small cracks in your window seams that can grow over time are one the most common inefficiencies when cooling your home in the summer. Caulking your window seams is a simple solution that can save you hundreds in cooling costs. Purchase a quality clear caulking material and calking tool and run it along your window seams.
Reverse ceiling fans
Once the temps start to rise, it’s best to reverse your ceiling fans to push air down, generating a breezy airflow in your room.
To do this, you should find a direction switch on the side of the fan above the blades. When the fan is in the ‘off’ position and completely stopped, use a ladder or a stool to reach the fan and flip this switch to reverse the fan’s direction.
Clean baseboards
Baseboards are often overlooked in day-to-day cleaning of your home, but they go a long way in brightening up a room if regularly cleaned. Now is a great time to tackle this chore with the in-and-out of summer foot traffic ahead. A damp cloth, patience and elbow grease is all you need to clean up the trim around your home.
Inspect and clean patios, walkways, and driveways
Another helpful summer prep task is to thoroughly inspect and pressure wash the exterior patios, walkways and driveways at your home. Before you start washing however, it's recommended to check these surfaces for new cracks, weeds or other concerning issues that may need attention. Once you’re satisfied with your inspection, get out that pressure washer to refresh the look and health of your outdoor surfaces.
