Would you like to lower your summer electric bills by up to 30% in about five minutes of effort?

Did you know that your ceiling fan has two direction settings and having them spin right round the right way can help make your home more comfortable while saving you money?

During the summer — when paired with an air conditioner — having your fan spin counterclockwise allows you to raise your thermostat by 4 degrees while still feeling comfortable and saving up to 30% on your energy bills. By swapping your fan direction during the winter heating season, you can see up to a 15% savings.

While fans make you feel warmer or cooler, they don’t actually affect the room temperature so in order to save the most money, get in the habit of switching them off when you leave the room to save the most money.

There’s a 50% chance that your ceiling fan is already heading in the right direction! Take a look up and see which way it’s going — if it’s already spinning the correct way for the current season then you can pat yourself on the back and enjoy the next four minutes project-free!

If it’s not already spinning in the correct direction, then you will need to grab a sturdy step stool or ladder that will allow you to safely reach your ceiling fan.

Before you step on that first rung, please be sure to turn off your ceiling fan. Once it has stopped spinning, carefully climb up the ladder and locate the directional button and press it in the opposite direction. Climb down, turn your fan back on, and enjoy lower energy bills!

What if my fan doesn’t have a direction button? While most fans spin both ways, if yours does not it might make financial sense to replace it. A basic model starts at $50, which could quickly be recouped through lower power bills.

What if I don’t feel safe climbing a ladder? Many ceiling fans now come with remotes that can change the fan direction without you ever needing to pull out a stepstool. We can help you find a pro to install a replacement ceiling fan.
